Find out more about Georgia’s background and what she is most looking forward to as a Stitchtopia expert...
I have knitted since I was a child, taught by my lovely Nanny with such (necessary!) patience. I later went on to study for a degree in textile design, specialising in knitted textiles, and spent the first few years as a graduate working in yarn stores, alongside building a career as a freelance designer.
I have now been designing for over a decade and, in more recent years, have expanded my practice to include teaching alongside designing. My approach to designing focuses on a creative design process that is the foundation of each design.
What drew you to becoming a Stitchtopia expert?
Firstly, knitting and travel are two of my favourite things, as I’m sure they are for many people. Secondly, teaching over an extended period, be that a weekend or a whole week, and getting to know a new group of knitters both inside and outside of the teaching sessions, is something I really enjoy.
Tell us about your process for creating a new project
It all starts with research and creative play, some colour journaling, collage and sketching. The next step is swatching, a bit like sketching with yarn, trying out ideas and then developing those ideas into fabrics and finished objects.
Your first holiday for Stitchtopia will take you to County Kerry. What is it about this part of Ireland that makes it such a fitting setting for a knitting experience?
It has to be the visit to the 17th-century Kerry Woollen Mills, being in a place with such a rich history of yarn production and textiles will be wonderful.
Which part of the trip are you most looking forward to?
I’m most looking forward to seeing the beautiful scenery of County Kerry. My paternal grandparents were both Irish and I’m excited to explore a new part of their home country.
Do you have any advice for those new to the concept of crafting holidays who may be looking to take the leap and book their first trip?
You’ll learn as much from the teacher in the classroom as you do from your fellow knitters/crafters over coffee or on the coach. Travelling, exploring and just spending time with people that share a common interest and are as passionate about it as you are, is a wonderful experience that I highly recommend!
