Immerse yourself in Welsh textile traditions on this knitting and crochet retreat that celebrates the craft, culture, and countryside of Wales. Over the course of your stay, explore the story of wool from fleece to fabric through visits to some of the country's most iconic wool and textile destinations. At the National Wool Museum, we'll step back in time to discover how wool shaped the economy and daily life of rural Wales. Then, be inspired by the artistry of quilts at the Jen Jones Welsh Quilt Centre, a tribute to Welsh needlework in the charming town of Lampeter. A behind-the-scenes visit to the British Wool Grading Depot in Brecon, will show us how raw fleece is assessed and prepared for market. Finally, experience small-scale farming at Aberhyddnant Organic Farm, where traditional sheep farming meets modern organic principles. The picturesque village of Dre-fach Felindre in the beautiful Teifi Valley was once the centre of the thriving woollen industry, earning the nickname ‘The Huddersfield of Wales’.
Here. we visit the National Wool Museum, which tells the story of the Welsh woollen industry through working machinery, archive material, hands-on displays and a textile gallery. The museum is housed in the historic former Cambrian Mills, which made shirts and shawls, blankets and bed covers, and stockings and socks that were sold throughout the world. We’ll follow the process from fleece to fabric and visit the sympathetically restored, listed mill buildings.
Since its official opening in 2010 by His Royal Highness King Charles and Queen Camilla, the Welsh Quilt Centre has become an exceptional venue in the heart of the Teifi Valley. The idea to open a centre to celebrate and promote a wider understanding of the Welsh quilt came from Jen Jones, whose obsession with collecting Welsh quilts, blankets and textiles has spanned over 40 years.
In Lampeter’s historic Town Hall, we’ll have the opportunity to learn about the ancient art of Welsh quilts and blankets as well as enjoying other work by local and international artists.
We have a full-day knitting or crochet workshop today with Anna. Lunch is included, and refreshments will be served morning and afternoon
We start today with a visit to the British Wool Grading Depot in Brecon, the perfect opportunity to see that earlier stage processing and learn about wool. Here, British Wool demonstrate the unique characteristics of British sheep breeds and offer a walk around their grading depot.
Family-run Aberhyddnant Farm is a 220-acre organic hill farm in the beautiful Brecon Beacons. Our visit begins with a warm welcome and a gentle introduction to the sheep, as we learn about the distinctive characteristics of different sheep breeds and the unique qualities of their fleeces.
We'll be guided through the full transformation of raw fleece: washing, carding, and preparing it for creative use and discover how the farm’s fleece becomes needle-felted treasures and hand-woven peg loom rugs – each piece a testament to traditional methods and mindful making.
