Meet your tour manager and Lucy at a London airport for your flight to Marrakech. Marrakech is the fourth largest city in the Kingdom of Morocco. The region has been inhabited by Berber farmers since Neolithic times, but the city itself was founded in 1070 as one of Morocco’s four imperial cities. The red walls of the city, along with numerous buildings constructed in red sandstone in the 1100s have given the city the nickname ‘the red city’. Today Marrakesh is one of the busiest cities in Africa.
We will be met by our local tour manager and transfer to our Riad in the Medina. This evening we will transfer to Dar Zellij, where we will enjoy a taste of real Moroccan cuisine.
Start your day with breakfast at the hotel and then join Lucy for your first crochet workshop of the holiday to start your projects.
This afternoon, we will join our local guide for a tour of Marrakech’s medina quarter (old city), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A visit to Marrakech would not be complete without discovering the treasures of it’s Old Town, enclosed by ancient walls. Wander through the maze of cobblestone lanes, admiring the colours of the textile and spice souks and the vibrant main square, Jemaa el-Fna.
The tour will end at the riad, where you will enjoy dinner this evening.
The Majorelle Garden is a botanical garden and villa complex created by French Orientalist artist Jacques Majorelle over almost 40 years, starting in 1923. Purchased by Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé in 1980, it is now owned by the Jardin Majorelle Foundation - which also includes the Yves Saint Laurent Museum - and is one of Morocco's top tourist attractions. Enjoy a guided tour of this mysterious and enchanting garden, enclosed by outer walls and filled with a labyrinth of alleyways and brightly coloured buildings.
After we will visit Thielman Cactus Garden, the largest Cactus plantation in Africa, and have the opportunity to have some lunch before returning to the riad for an afternoon of crochet with Lucy.
Today we depart Marrakech and travel to Essaouira by coach. This charming, fortified city clings to the sea and retains its traditional culture and character. It is known for its fortifications, narrow streets, whitewashed houses, colours, and scents.
Upon arrival into the city, we will enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before this afternoon’s guided tour. During the tour we will visit the fishing port, the Sqala and the charming old medina where you can explore the bazaars filled with Moroccan eateries and shops selling ceramics, spices and textiles.
This evening we will have dinner at the hotel.
Continue with your crochet projects with Lucy today at the hotel.
Discover three towns on today’s excursion, starting with Oualidia, a charming seaside resort bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on one side and a saltwater lagoon on the other and known as Morocco’s oyster capital. Next is Safi, a port city home to Ksar El Bahr, a 16th-century fortress built by Portuguese settlers. In the old town, food and craft stands line the Souq street and nearby the National Museum of Ceramics houses a collection of decorated pottery from the region. Here, we will have the chance to visit the potter’s market and pick up some souvenirs. Our last town of the day is El Jaddia where we will visit the Portuguese Cistern before returning to Essaouira.
This morning we will discover how Argan Oil is produced at a local Argan Oil cooperative and learn how the women who work here create the oil and products.
This afternoon we will return to the hotel, where you can enjoy some free time to either continue with your crochet or relax.
After breakfast, we will transfer to Marrakech airport for our return flight to the UK.
Tour Notes: You will need to have a reasonable level of fitness to get the most out of this holiday. We therefore do not recommend this tour for anyone with mobility problems. The itinerary involves some walking whilst sightseeing each day, sometimes in warm temperatures and often on rough ground and including steps. Whilst sightseeing is taken at a leisurely pace, for the enjoyment of everyone in the group you should be able to keep up with your fellow travellers. Due to the traditional design of the Riads, most of them do not provide lift access.
You will stay for three nights at the 4-star Dar Baraka & Karam Riad and four nights at the 5-star Hotel Le Medina Essouira Thalassa Sea & Spa.
