Our first day focuses on the traditional Japanese stitching technique of Sashiko, beginning with an introduction to its history and cultural significance, illustrated by a selection of samples for inspiration and discussion. You’ll learn how to prepare and mark fabric using traditional grid patterns before being guided through the basic running stitch technique that forms the foundation of Sashiko work, creating your own stitched panel featuring a traditional grid design combined with a Sakura (cherry blossom) motif.
In the afternoon, there will be an opportunity to review progress, continue stitching and learn how to back and finish the panel. The day concludes with a relaxed show-and-tell session for you to share your work and ideas with the group.
On our second day, we’ll explore the rich history and aesthetic of Japanese Boro textiles. You’ll be introduced to the origins of Boro, a traditional form of patched and repaired fabric created through necessity and careful hand stitching. Historical examples and sample pieces will be available to view, providing inspiration for colour, texture, layering and composition. You’ll then begin designing your own Boro-inspired textile panel, learning how to layer fabrics and arrange stitched patches to create depth and character. Guidance will be given on laying out the design, selecting fabrics and tacking the layers onto a foundation cloth before beginning the hand-stitching process.
During the afternoon session, you’ll continue developing your panel with support and advice from Janice throughout. We’ll also look at techniques for backing and finishing the panel. The day concludes with a friendly show-and-tell session, giving everyone the opportunity to share their finished work, discuss techniques and reflect on the creative process.
Following the workshop, depart Blunsdon House Hotel and make your own way home.
