Spend a relaxing and inspiring weekend exploring the art of knitting pattern writing and adaptation. This weekend is designed for knitters who are ready to take their making a step further by learning how to create patterns from their own ideas, adapt existing designs, and better understand how garments are constructed. Throughout the weekend, you’ll work alongside Sarah Hatton and other like-minded knitters in a supportive, creative environment. Through a mix of guided teaching, discussion, and hands-on project work, you’ll learn the principles behind pattern construction and apply them to your own ideas. Whether you’d like to recreate a favourite garment, adapt an old pattern, or bring a completely new design to life, this weekend will give you the confidence and practical skills to begin writing patterns that work for you.
Our UK team is here and happy to help!
Please choose your preferred 3 day itinerary
Skill Level: Participants should have good basic maths skills and intermediate knitting skills.
Requirements List: Please bring with you: the yarn and needles that you hope to knit your project up in so that your pattern can be written to the specific yarn, lots of ideas of patterns to adapt and/or hand-knitted or store-bought garments you would like to recreate as well as your basic knitting kit.
Make your own way to the hotel and check in to your room from 3pm. Get to know your expert, Retreat Manager and fellow crafters over dinner this evening.
Today we focus on understanding the foundations of knitting pattern writing. We’ll begin by looking at the basic maths involved in constructing a knitting pattern, including how measurements, stitch counts, shaping, and proportions work together to create a garment. Through discussion and examples, you’ll learn how patterns are built and how to approach translating an idea into a workable design. There will also be time to look at the garments, yarn, and inspiration that you and your fellow knitters have brought to the weekend, helping us to start planning the projects you will develop further the following day.
Today we focus on applying the techniques learnt the previous day to your own projects. Using the garments, yarn, patterns, and inspiration brought to the weekend, we’ll work through individual ideas and begin developing or adapting your patterns. This will include discussing construction, sizing, shaping, and yarn choices, as well as problem-solving any design challenges. Today is hands-on and discussion-led, giving you the opportunity to explore your ideas in depth and leave with the knowledge you need to continue developing your own patterns independently.
