Pula is the largest city in Istria and one of Croatia's most important historical and cultural centres. It is best known for its remarkably preserved Roman heritage, which we'll explore on our guided walking tour.
We then visit Itmans Emporio, a haven for crochet and knitting enthusiasts, selling yarns, tools and other accessories.
This afternoon, in the small town of Barban, we will join a private crocheted lace (ĉentrin) workshop with a skilled local artisan. During the experience, we will be introduced to the centuries-old techniques and intricate patterns that reflect Istria's rich cultural heritage, while enjoying a selection of local wines and cheeses. A ĉentrin is a traditional, handmade crocheted lace centrepiece or decorative tablecloth commonly found in Istrian and Adriatic households. They were often made by women as part of preparing the family home or as a dowry. These delicate textile pieces were traditionally displayed on tables, cabinets and chests, and featured detailed geometric and floral motifs.
Today we enjoy a full-day workshop with Jane at the hotel. Light lunch and refreshments will be provided.
Hum is often celebrated as the smallest town in the world, a tiny yet captivating settlement nestled in the hills of Istria. Despite its size, Hum is rich in history and charm, with roots stretching back to medieval times. Encircled by ancient stone walls, the town is reached through a series of historic gates adorned with Glagolitic inscriptions, reflecting the region's early Slavic heritage. Inside, a handful of narrow streets lead past traditional stone houses, a small church and quiet courtyards that seem untouched by time. Enjoy some free time here to explore at your own pace, take in the panoramic views and browse the small local shops offering handmade souvenirs and regional delicacies.
Continue to Pazin, a historic town known for its dramatic setting and rich cultural heritage. Perched above a deep natural chasm, the town is dominated by Pazin Castle, a well-preserved medieval fortress, which now houses the Ethnographic Museum of Istria, where we'll explore traditional life, crafts and customs of the region.
During our guided tour we'll see folk costumes, embroidered clothing, woven textiles and domestic handicrafts from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The exhibits beautifully illustrate the role of women in preserving textile traditions through the generations.
Enjoy another full-day workshop with Jane at the hotel. Light lunch and refreshments will be provided.
Rovinj is one of the most picturesque coastal towns in Croatia, renowned for its colourful Old Town, narrow cobbled streets and unmistakable Mediterranean charm. Once a small fishing village, it has retained its strong maritime character and rich cultural heritage. At its heart lies the historic Old Town, built on a small peninsula where tightly packed pastel-coloured houses rise directly above the sea. Our guided walking tour will explore Rovinj's fascinating history and Venetian influences, while also highlighting the town's long tradition of small-scale craftsmanship and creative trades.
There's free time to browse the many artisan boutiques and galleries here, or relax with a coffee by the sea and watch the world go by.
We have a final full-day workshop with Jane at the hotel. Light lunch and refreshments will be provided.
If you have booked our join direct package, your tour ends after breakfast.
With our flight-inclusive package, we transfer to Pula Airport for our return flight to London.
Tour Notes: You will need to have a reasonable level of fitness to get the most out of this holiday. On excursion days you will need to walk a short distance from the hotel to the coach, and you should be able to board the coach unaided. On arrival at the excursion destination, you should be able to alight the coach unaided and there may be a walk between the coach drop off point and the excursion venue. By their nature, walking tours, museum visits etc involve being on your feet for a significant amount of time. Whilst our excursions are taken at a leisurely pace, for the enjoyment of everyone in the group you should be able to keep up with your fellow travellers.
