Step into this creative weekend exploring how colour and texture come together in the art of cable knitting with Mandy Cameron. Across two inspiring days, you'll experiment with two- and three-colour cables, use both intarsia and Fair Isle cable methods, and discover how colour placement can transform their definition. With guidance throughout, you'll develop confidence in chart reading, shaping and working with multiple cables. By the end of the retreat, you'll have a collection of vibrant swatches and the skills to turn them into a unique finished textile piece full of depth and personality.
Our UK team is here and happy to help!
Please choose your preferred 3 day itinerary
Skill level: Proficiency with core basics of knit and purl stitches. Easy to intermediate.
Requirements list: 4mm, 5mm straight knitting needles, cable needles, scissors, stitch markers, tape measure, notepad and pen.
Make your own way to the hotel and check in to your room from 3pm. Get to know your expert, Retreat Manager and fellow crafters over dinner this evening.
We'll begin the day by learning how to read charts and symbols, before moving on to using a wrong-side set-up row and working with multiple cables within the same project. Throughout the day, you'll experiment with different background stitches to see how they affect the appearance and definition of the cables. Later, we'll create two-colour cables to add interest and depth, all using the intarsia cable method.
Today, we'll explore cable construction further, learning how changing the proportions can create condensed or elongated patterns. We'll then look at combination and double-crossing techniques, and how using three colours can enhance the braid. Mandy will introduce the Fair Isle cable method, and we'll conclude with shaping techniques, including increases and decreases to prevent flaring or splaying. You'll come away with swatches which you can join to create something unique, along with fresh knitting skills and new-found friends.
Following the workshop, depart the hotel and make your own way home.
